Planning a holiday in Brisbane Australia?
If you have never been to Brisbane you will be surprise that it is a great holiday destination for everyone.
This third largest city in Queensland is situated in a good position between Sunshine Coast to the north and Gold Coast to the South.
Although it is not as vibrant as Sydney and Melbourne there are many reasons to travel here.
For most people it is the gateway to stunning beaches, World Heritage listed Fraser Island and Great Barrier Reef, hinterlands, rainforests and numerous exotic islands up north.
And if you happen to come here on a business trip or en route to other parts of Queensland I will encourage you to spent a day or two to enjoy this modern city.
Brisbane has full of music and culture with a blend of modern and historic buildings. You can base yourself here and explore the surrounding regions such as Stradbroke and Moreton Island or visit the Lavender farm in Boonah.
If you have less time there are many places to visit and things to do within walking distance from Brisbane city.
A good way to explore this lovely city when you first arrived is by foot, or on the inexpensive Brisbane CityCat which is a public ferry crossing the Brisbane River.
The Tourist Information Center in the shopping district of Queen Street Mall has maps and travel brochures to help you navigate.
Brisbane City
It is easy to stay in the city as there are many accommodations offering competitive rates. Big shopping mall, boutique shops, cafes, and restaurant can be found along the Mall.
The Science Center in the heart of the city is a fantastic place for families with kids. It offers interactive science-based exhibitions, events and activities, very educational and enjoyable for everyone.
Treasury Casino located on the corner of George Street is a great place for those who wants to try their luck at the gambling table.
Other interesting sight right at the heart of the city center includes the City Hall, Anzac Square, Customs House, Botanic Gardens and Parliament House.
Brisbane Entertainment Scene
Many clubs and bars are conveniently located around Caxton Street in Petrie Terrace, Eagle Street in the city, and Fortitude Valley.
Walking across Victoria Bridge from the top of Queen Street Mall will lead you to the cultural precinct of South Bank.
South Bank
South Bank is home to Queensland Cultural Center which is make up of performing arts, art gallery and museum.
You can also find top-end hotels and apartments, parklands and the famous street beach overlooking the Brisbane River.
It is a great place to live, play and relax ,and on weekends the area comes alive with performances, music and street markets displaying local arts and crafts, home-wares, massages, home-made spices and souvenirs.
A great way to experience the glittering night scene of Brisbane and its winding river is to ride on the iconic Wheel of Brisbane, stay in one of the apartments facing the river or take a cruise on the Brisbane CityCat.
Adventure Around Brisbane
If you love adventure then climbing to the top of the Story Bridge may be of interest to you.
And at a height of 80 meters this will definitely speed up your pulse rates. The view at the top overlooking the winding Brisbane river and Moreton Islands are just magnificent.
Besides Story Bridge Climb you can participate in rock climbing at Kangaroo Point. Climbing to the top of the 20 meters cliffs is certainly very challenging and there are climbs catered for various levels of difficulty.
Outside Brisbane City
Just outside the city area there are many places to go with certain attractions less than 10 kilometers away.
Mount Coot-tha
This mountain is located about 5 minutes from the city with scenic lookout, Botanic Gardens and Planetarium. It is also a popular spot to enjoy the night view of Brisbane and its surrounding suburbs.
Australian Wildlife
For those who love animals there are two wildlife sanctuary located not far from the city.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is the most popular attractions where you can cuddle the cute Koala anytime and hand feed Kangaroos. It is also home to other Australian natives such as the emus, possums, dingoes, platypus, Tasmania Devils, wombats and many more.
Alma Park Zoo which is slightly further away from the city is also a favorite with adults and kids.
The Australia Zoo located in Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast about 45 minutes north of Brisbane is a great way to spend your day out of the busy city.
On exhibit here are many exotic animals such as tigers, rhinoceros, giraffe, crocodiles, elephants, zebra and many other wild and ferocious animals.
Gold Coast Theme Parks
Theme parks such as Movie World, Dreamworld, Wet’n'Wild and Whitewater world are easily accessible via the motorway from Brisbane. There is a train departing from central station to Coomera Station.
Alternatively some hotels do have shuttle bus service to various parks.
If you have more time to spend then a day trip to Bribie Island is worth considering as the lovely surf beach is not overcrowded and you can participate in all types of water activities.
As you can see there is something for everyone to enjoy while on holiday in Brisbane from historic buildings, lovely parklands to a fantastic cluster of arts and cultural centers.
